Kabaristimewa.id, SAMARINDA – Di jantung Kalimantan Timur, Sungai Mahakam mengalir tenang, membelah hamparan hijau hutan dan perkampungan yang menggantungkan hidup pada aliran airnya. Dengan panjang 980 kilometer, Mahakam menjadi sungai terpanjang kedua di Indonesia, menjelma sebagai sumber kehidupan sekaligus simbol kebanggaan bagi masyarakat di sekitarnya.
Penamaan Mahakam menyimpan sejarah dan makna filosofis. Salah satu kisah mengaitkannya dengan “Muara Kaman,” pusat kejayaan Kerajaan Kutai Martadipura. Ada pula yang percaya bahwa Mahakam berasal dari dua kata, “maha” berarti besar dan “kama” bermakna cinta, menggambarkan cinta besar yang mengalir bersama arus sungai ini.
Sungai Mahakam telah menjadi denyut kehidupan masyarakat sejak zaman dahulu. Alirannya menyediakan air bersih untuk kebutuhan sehari-hari, mulai dari memasak hingga mandi. Selain itu, sungai ini juga berperan sebagai jalur transportasi utama yang menghubungkan wilayah-wilayah di Kalimantan Timur, sekaligus menjadi ladang perikanan yang kaya akan hasil laut.
Namun, Mahakam bukan sekadar sungai. Ia adalah rumah bagi satwa-satwa endemik yang menjadi bagian dari kekayaan alam Indonesia. Di antaranya, pesut Mahakam yang terancam punah, burung enggang, dan lutung yang sering terlihat di sekitar aliran sungai. Keberadaan mereka menjadikan Mahakam sebagai salah satu ekosistem yang perlu dijaga kelestariannya.
Pesona Mahakam juga dapat dinikmati melalui berbagai aktivitas wisata. Salah satunya adalah menyusuri sungai dengan kapal wisata, yang menawarkan pengalaman mendalam untuk menikmati keindahan alam dan kehidupan masyarakat lokal. Dengan tarif Rp 70.000 untuk dewasa dan Rp 35.000 untuk anak-anak, perjalanan ini menjadi pilihan menarik bagi wisatawan.
